Larco Hospitality—a hotel management company based in Vancouver—has been a client of Terlin Construction for over a decade. One of the crown jewels of their portfolio is the iconic Fairmont Château Laurier in downtown Ottawa. Built in 1912, the Château is a National Historic Site of Canada, and has played host to a veritable who’s-who of Canadian and international luminaries.

Terlin has proudly completed myriad projects in the hotel, including two major renovations in the past five years. The most recent was the complete overhaul of Zoe’s Restaurant (see above), and the transformation of an underdeveloped space off the lobby into Zoe’s Lounge. Both spaces feature exquisite finishes and materials, and custom millwork (built by Terlin) that complements and enhances the original architectural details. Terlin was even tasked with finding a way to protect the recently recovered iconic portrait of Winston Churchill, The Roaring Lion, by Yousef Karsh. Terlin’s President, Terry McLaughlin, often entertains clients and partners at Zoe’s. “I love to show off our team’s work. I have a real sense of pride when I look around at what we accomplished there,” he said.

Another major project Terlin completed in the hotel was the total renovation of the sixth floor guestrooms, along with the luxurious Karsh and Hays suites. As is the case in many buildings of this vintage, you never quite know what you are going to find once you start construction. Our team was proactive in planning for unknown site conditions, and even had replica screws fabricated to match an original screw from 1912!
All of the projects Terlin has undertaken on behalf of Larco have been completed while the hotel was occupied. Our team truly excels at ensuring as little disruption to guests as possible. When asked about Terlin, Katherine (Kat) Velez, Larco Director, Design Deployment and Procurement, said, “What makes working with Terlin great is the proactive way they approach each construction project. They identify the challenges upfront and come to me with solutions. I know when they are on a project we are in good hands.”
We look forward to many more successful projects at the hotel, and thank the whole team at Larco for their ongoing trust and support.
